Moving Closer to Defining San Diego Civic Solutions

Mary MacLellan
April 16, 2004

Hi Chris—here is some definition for what San Diego Civic Solutions will represent. We plan on working collaboratively with Envision San Diego and other civic groups who are looking to re-engage our citizenry in visioning and taking positive action for the future of the San Diego region. San Diego Civic Solutions was founded in early 2004 by Sandy Goodkin, Tom Carter and Michael Stepner. We meet once a month on the first Thursday of every month at noon. For more information contact; Sandy Goodkin at sgoodkin@san.rr.com.

San Diego Civic Solutions:

  1. We wish to unalienate the citizenry;
  2. We must study what the citizens wish to accomplish in their selfless moments, which sometimes appear less and less;
  3. Dan Yankelovich feels that this is a thin crust covering a deep hunger for engagement. We aim to find out.
  4. We wish to enter a dialogue with our fellow-citizens-through their organizations and universities--and which can become the civic infrastructure of our region.
  5. We will reach out for institutional cooperation to create and expand involvement;
  6. We will examine strategic issues which wound or heal our civic possibilities, which would include infrastructure, housing affordability, economic growth, environmental preservation and cooperative border issues;
  7. We will recruit writers who convey what we have found and what we recommend;
  8. We will also appear before civic and faith-based groups, as well as students of planning and design to listen and to share.
